In summer 2020, the City of Barrie agreed to make ranked ballots a referendum question in 2022 – joining a group of cities working towards adopting this more democratic method of electing Council.
In October, the Provincial government proposed a bill to eliminate that choice for municipalities. This anti-democratic move by the province was included in legislation intended to deal with COVID-19 Recovery in an attempt to sneak the change through.
The provincial government squashed local democracy and took the choice of how we vote away from local residents.
We're urging you to contact your Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) to tell them to not take away our ability to choose our election process.
