🚨⛺️ State of Emergency to Address Encampments
Media Release, September 9: https://barrie.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F&ID=14763020&GUID=DA40117A-B3C1-4E55-A723-98C59397FDE2 "Mayor Nuttall declares State of Emergency to address encampments"
The declaration and press release are highly problematic on many levels. First, the State of Emergency is only about removing people from encampents, not finding them alternate housing - and we know that there is NOT accessible housing or even shelter available for this number of people. It also appears to be penalizing ALL encampments for issues that occurred at one in particular, associates all people suffering homelessness with crime and drug use, and once again criminalizes being unfortunate enough to in poverty, rather than tackling the systemic issues underlying the housing crisis.
🧑🍳💣 Midway Diner Demolition
Letter from Cathy Colebatch, Bill Scott and Arnie Ivsins, September 7: https://barrie.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F&ID=14763007&GUID=4AE54A24-5C6D-4B25-95FB-57896F71FC26
Sharing a petition against the destruction of the Midway Diner building:
This petition calls on Barrie's City Council, heritage conservation authorities, and community leaders to recognize the importance of the Midway Diner and take immediate action to prevent its demolition. By exploring alternative avenues for urban development that integrate rather than eradicate our historical sites, we can ensure that Barrie's history and heritage live on.
