🚰⚡️ Surface Water Treatment Plant (SWTP) Low Lift Pumping Station Emergency Standby Generator (Ward 10)

  • Report: https://barrie.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F&ID=14016192&GUID=F66467AC-69C3-4BDB-B8CB-C35358DE7AF3

  • Recommendations:

    • Approve a new Capital Project to design, supply and install a standby power generator at the Surface Water Treatment Plant (SWTP) Low Lift Pumping Station (LLPS), budgeting $3,914,000 from the Water Capital Reserve

    • Return $3,914,000 in Water Capital Reserve-funded projects as part of the 2026 Capital Budget

  • The current electrical power cable connecting the SWTP to the LLPS has deteriorated to the point where it causes recurring electrical faults.

  • Water Operations installed a temporary emergency generator at the LLPS to ensure there is continuous drinking water for all during emergency power outages

  • HELD by Hamilton

    • Hamilton enquired as to the lifespan of the generator, and whether it might be more cost-efficient to continue renting?

      • Araniyasundaran explained that a permanent generator would typically have a lifespan of about 40 years. Also, there were a number of features that would be included in the permanent generator that is not part of the temporary generator (which is one reason why the cost of the permanent generator is higher)

      • Hamilton agreed it made more sense

    • Nuttall explained that responsibility for drinking water and handling water-related emergencies was Municipal since the Walkerton disaster, and felt this was a proper investment

  • APPROVED, unanimously
