June 24, 2024 - Women's Strike Canada - www.womensstrikecanada.ca - Organize Unite March

June 24 marks two years since the US Supreme Courts overturned Roe v. Wade in the Dobbs case. Over a dozen states had "trigger laws" that banned abortions, and to this day accessing or providing safe, legal abortions in most of the US is a crime.

Here in Canada, while abortion has been decriminalized since the Morgentaler decision in 1988, we all know that progress is ever-tenuous and is under threat. Here, and across the globe, reproductive rights are under threat.

Not only is abortion inaccessible to non-existent in many parts of Canada - particularly northern, rural, and remote communities - only one hospital in six offers abortion, and some provinces refuse to cover the cost of surgical abortion outside hospitals. There are also active efforts to roll back reproductive rights from conservative, anti-choice politicians and right wing organizations as well as increasing rhetoric against women's rights and freedoms and those of Two Spirit, Trans, and gender diverse people from the same groups. These fights are interlinked.

So, a Women's Strike is being organized across Canada to call attention to this, call out anti-choice politicians, and call for action from our elected officials. This strike is fighting for reproductive justice, justice for missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and Two Spirit people (MMIWG2), and against intimate partner violence (IPV) and gender-based violence (GBV).
